MADD hosting online conference on rights Sunday

Crime victims will share stories

Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Pennsylvania will observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week — April 19 to 25 — online this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead of holding “Celebration of Life” events at parks or other venues in Butler and other counties, MADD is hosting a statewide Zoom teleconference from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, said Robin Weitz, a MADD victim services specialist for all of Western Pennsylvania.

The nonprofit organization's “Celebration of Life” is a memorial tribute that honors those that have been lost to impaired driving.

The event, she noted, is also being held to kick off National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

“We're recognizing any victim of crime,” Weitz said Wednesday, “but we're focusing on DUI victims.”

The program Sunday will feature an address from Helen Witty, MADD's national president; and a recorded talk, “Knowing Your Rights as a Victim,” from Jennifer Storm, a state victim/witness advocate.

Additionally, during the virtual event, crime victims will share their stories through personal accounts, readings and poems.

“Telling one's story is an important healing part for victims,” said Weitz, who regularly attends DUI Court in Butler County in support of victims.

Registration is required for Sunday's event. For more information or to register: www.madd.org/Pennsylvania/celebration-of-life.
