Butler County's great daily newspaper

Don't let Wolf's revenuers take what is ours

Dogpatch USA was the home of comic book characters Li’l Abner and Daisy Mae, and Li’l Abner’s parents, Mammy and Pappy Yokum.

The whole community revolved around bootleg liquor that was part strength and part love potion and avoiding the government representatives the fictional town’s characters referred to as “revenuers,” who were usually trying to collect taxes.

But when Hollywood made a movie based on the popular syndicated comic strip from the “funny papers” they added draft dodging to the plot. It isn’t important to this editorial.

But Mammy Yokum’s Yokumberry Tonic made the boys of Dogwood extremely handsome and blessed with very masculine physiques.

The reason for this opening is we finally see firsthand evidence of a need to be wary of the revenuers coming into our very own Dogpatch USA — which we will call Butler County. The revenuers under the direction of Gov. Tom Wolf have stated their possible intention to come to our neck of the woods and take what is rightfully ours.

The facts are that Butler County and Butler Health System have done a better job of collecting and securing much-needed and desired safety materials for the battle against the coronavirus or any other virus or disease.

Butler County’s generous and thoughtful residents have given from their wallets and their hearts to make sure “Pappy” Ken DeFurio and his team has plenty of supplies to combat the storm.

But now, taking a cue from Gov. Cuomo of New York, Wolf started making noise about what he feels are his rights to come and take all our community donated and secured so as to be ready for such an occurrence as this COVID-19 pandemic.

Obviously, Philadelphia and other parts to the east weren’t alert or cautious enough to do the same. So, like Cuomo has done in New York, Wolf is preparing to play Robin Hood and take from the conscientious and give to the unprepared or prodigals.

Butler County people and businesses are very generous, but also very good at preparation. It is not right to place our local health system and our residents in danger by taking supplies that have been bought at least in part by our donations, only to spread them across the state because there are more voters there.

We already subsidize the mass transit systems of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh heavily by fuel taxes and Turnpike fees.

The money trail to Harrisburg has been one-way only for far too long. We won’t be so improper as to advocate our army of hunters protect our hospital walls with armed resistance, but it sure is tempting.

You won’t find Wolf’s local hospital on a list of hospitals ordered to give away ventilators, masks, gloves and other protective gear.

The revenuers are planning to steal our safety net. And since Wolf is a lame-duck governor, there isn’t political recourse against him. He can be as unethical and blindly unfair as he chooses.

The elected official in Li’l Abner was named Senator Jack S. Phogbound. Good enough name for a wealthy Pennsylvania governor playing politics with the lives of Western Pennsylvanians for the betterment of the electorate closer to his home.
