Cranberry to consider waiving utility fees, penalties

CRANBERRY TWP — In a virtual meeting Thursday that will be streamed live on the township’s website, Cranberry supervisors will consider waiving penalties and fees for late municipal-provided utility bills.

A meeting agenda on the township’s website indicated that a resolution will be under consideration to waive interest, late fees and penalties on delinquent water, sewage and solid waste bills sent between April and July. One-half of penalties incurred after the July bill will be charged in August, and full amounts will return in September. Because the fees will be wholly waived, they will not be capitalized in later months.

The idea to consider such a resolution at Thursday’s meeting comes after the township has been contacted by residents about financial concerns in a time when a nearly unprecedented number of workers are being laid off or furloughed.

“Everyone’s suffering financial stress. The hotels, the business, the residents, and the board understands,” said Jerry Andree, township manager.

Supervisors also will consider a resolution declaring a disaster emergency in the township due to the coronavirus pandemic, which would give the township the ability to, among other powers, disregard “time-consuming” regulations that typically must be followed when Cranberry spends money or enters into contracts.

The meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m., can be seen at cranberrytownship.org/boardmeeting.
