Fire forces five from Butler home
Fire officials are trying to determine the cause of a blaze early Friday that forced two adults and three children from a Butler home divided into two apartments.
No one was injured, but the three-story house at 108 Second Ave. was left uninhabitable. Neither the owner nor the tenants had insurance, authorities said.
The fire call came in about 4:30 a.m. City police were first on scene with Butler firefighters there in a matter of minutes. By the time fire crews arrived, officials learned that all of the occupants were out safely.
Robert Wargo lived in the first-floor apartment, and Tamara Speed and her children, ages, 6, 14 and 15, lived in the upstairs apartment, which included the attic. Michael Stebbins of Renfrew owns the house.
It appears the fire started in the front of the second-story apartment, said Capt. Kevin McAfee of the Butler Fire Department.
“When we got there,” he said, “there was heavy fire coming out the windows of the second floor, in front of the building.”
Firefighters initially attacked the blaze from the outside.
“It took about two or three minutes to knock it down,” McAfee said, “and then we made an interior attack.”
A crew went through the front door and up the stairs. Firefighters said once upstairs they encountered clutter, primarily bags of clothes and toys.
The fire, which spread into the walls and attic, was under control in about 20 to 30 minutes. Fire officials said they did not see any smoke detectors in the house.
The second floor suffered most of the fire damage. McAfee described the front of the upstairs apartment as being “burned out.”
He said the back of the apartment and the attic also sustained fire damage, and the upstairs apartment had heavy smoke damage. Crews also punched holes in the walls to fight the fire.
The first floor had smoke damage and the entire house sustained water damage.
Butler Fire Chief Chris Switala is investigating the blaze, which is not considered suspicious and is believed to be electrical in nature.
Butler Township Volunteer Fire District 3 and the Butler VA Fire Department assisted city firefighters. Butler Ambulance Service was also at the scene.
The American Red Cross was notified and is reportedly assisting the tenants.
