Ohio woman charged in robbery investigations
An Ohio woman is accused of pointing a gun at a man in a suspected marijuana rip-off last month in Butler.
City police obtained an arrest warrant Wednesday for Sarah E. Fox, 20, of Ironton, in connection with the alleged Feb. 8 incident.
But that wasn't the only warrant they got. In a second one, Fox is charged in an alleged armed home invasion last month in the city's Island neighborhood.
Police last week charged three others — Lamont A. “Butt Butt” Franklin, 18, of Butler; Maurice A. “Little Philly” Franklin, 27, of Freeport; and Shawndell J. Zapata, 17, of Butler — in connection with that Feb. 16 incident.
Arrest warrants were issued last week for the trio, who remain at large.
Detectives began investigating the earlier incident after a 26-year-old Butler man reported being robbed at gunpoint by an unknown woman, police said.
The victim told investigators he was in the back seat of a car the woman was driving shortly after midnight Feb. 8, before she parked in an alley behind St. Mary Street. Police believe he was with the women as part of an arranged drug deal.
According to authorities, the man recounted Fox and another unknown woman who was in the front passenger seat, both pointed pistols at him. The man said the rear doors of the vehicle were locked, and he could not get out of the car before the women stole $50 in currency and a small amount of marijuana from him.
Police report that at some point, according to the victim's account, he was able to get away.
The victim said he later identified Fox while communicating with her on the social media app Snapchat and finding her Facebook page.
“When he looked at the pictures associated with the (Facebook) account,” according to charging documents, “he recognized (Fox) to be the driver of the car and one of the women who robbed him.”
Just days after that suspected robbery, police were called to investigate an alleged home invasion that happened shortly after 6 a.m. Feb. 16 at 307 Negley Ave.
A 36-year-old woman told police three males forced their way into her home, investigators said. She said one of them held her down while another one held down her 14-year-old son, who lives with her.
The boy reported one of them also had a handgun. Police suspect it was Maurice Franklin with the gun
A third suspect, the woman said, went upstairs and confronted her adult daughter and the daughter's ex-boyfriend. Detectives believe the 23-year-old ex-boyfriend was the target of the home invasion.
The suspected robbers thought the man had “a large amount of money,” according to charging documents.
The trio left and no one in the house was injured. The victims, police said, did not immediately report the incident.
About 6:30 a.m. that day police discovered Lamont Franklin with a gunshot wound to his right side near the lower abdomen. He was found at his sister's house on Brown Avenue, where he also lives.
He was treated at a Pittsburgh hospital for his gunshot wound.
Police subsequently learned of the home invasion, authorities said, and the victims identified Lamont Franklin, his uncle, Maurice Franklin, and Zapata as the robbers.
But police also acknowledged the victims have not been fully forthcoming with investigators.
Before Lamont Franklin was released from UPMC Presbyterian hospital, a detective spoke to him about how he got shot. His account, however, was ultimately proven false, police said.
He also denied knowing anything about the home invasion, police said. Investigators believe he was shot during or shortly after the home invasion.
In the course of the investigation, police spoke to Fox, who they identified as Zapata's girlfriend. She was interviewed Feb. 21, a day after police arrested her in the city for driving under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of a small amount of marijuana.
She was placed in Butler County Prison following her arrest
During her police interview, she allegedly admitted to being the getaway driver during the planned home invasion.
The plan, she recounted, was “to rob (the 23-year-old man) because they believed that he had a large sum of money in his possession,” documents said.
Following the home invasion, Fox said her alleged accomplices got into the car she was driving. She noticed Lamont Franklin had been shot when he got in the vehicle.
Police said the woman told them she drove to Lamont Franklin's home, and she was paid $100 for her role in the crime.
Additionally, police said Fox admitted during the interview that she had previously robbed a man at gunpoint after arranging to buy marijuana from him.
“She decided that when the man came out,” documents said, “she was going to put her doors on 'child lock' and rob him.”
While police continued their investigation, Fox was released from prison March 2 after waiving her preliminary hearing on charges in the DUI arrest.
In the arrest warrant in the Feb. 8 incident, she is charged with robbery and theft. In the alleged home invasion, she is charged with burglary, robbery, conspiracy and corruption of minors.
