McClaine, Thrash help Butler to win

Butler's duo of Bekk McClaine and Ben Thrash prevailed in the third set against Knoch's Adam Walker and Adam Huckestein, earning for the Golden Tornado boys tennis team a season-opening, 3-2 win at home over the Knights Friday afternoon.

McClaine and Thrash won by scores of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Singles: 1-Collin Gahagen (B) def. Sam Blair 7-5, 6-3; 2-Kevin Golden (K) def. Josh Kelley 6-0, 6-4; 3-Trevor Ackelson (B) def. John Mack 6-4, 1-6, 6-3

Doubles: 1-Bekk McClaine/Ben Thrash (B) def. Adam Walker/Adam Huckestein 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; 2-Justin Walls/Jake Santora (K) def. Clark Stanton/Colin Welsh 6-3, 6-2

Knoch traveled to North Hills Wednesday and opened its season with a 3-2 win over the Indians.

Justin Walls won for the Knights in singles play while the duos of Adam Walker/Adam Huckestein and Ryan Barnes/Jake Santora both won in doubles action.

Knoch 3, North Hills 2

Singles: 1-Brandon McEwen (NH) def. Sam Blair 10-0; 2-Nate Belack (NH) def. John Mack 10-7; 3-Justin Walls (K) def. Ethan Borsh 10-7

Doubles: 1-Adam Walker/Adam Huckestein (K) def. Conner Farrar/Justin Raush 10-2; 2-Ryan Barnes/Jake Santora (K) def. Luke Nutter/Stephen Snyder 10-1

Hockey

Mars' Mack Riemer and Wes Scurci both scored a goal, but Baldwin's Noah Fischer scored almost five minutes into overtime, handing the Highlanders a 3-2 victory over the Planets in Wednesday's PIHL Class 2A semifinal at Robert Morris University's Island Sports Center.

Riemer's tally tied the game at 1-1 in the first period and Scurci's score knotted the game at two mid-way through the third period.

Danny Mitchell recorded 42 saves for the Planets (11-9) while Tanner Cindrich had 19 for Baldwin (19-1).
