Retrial for priest whose conviction was thrown out
After being sentenced to jail earlier this year for sex abuse, a retired priest from Munhall will be retried after a Pittsburgh judge tossed out his conviction.
The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh placed Hugh Lang and two other priests on academic and administrative leave in 2018 after sexual abuse allegations surfaced.
Lang, the former superintendent of schools for the diocese of Pittsburgh, retired as pastor in Munhall in 2006.
On Nov. 8, Judge Mark Tranquilli found Lang guilty during a nonjury trial on a number of sex offenses related to an incident in 2001 against a 10-year-old while Lang was pastor in Munhall, according to court documents. But the sentence and conviction were overturned by Judge Anthony Mariani, who took over the case in February, after a post-sentence motion was filed by Lang’s lawyer, Robert Mielnicki.
“The (Catholic) church recognizes the decision of the court, and will wait until all court proceedings are completed before moving forward in its canonical process. We continue to pray for all involved,” Bishop David Zubik said in a prepared statement released by the diocese.
According to the statement, Lang has maintained his innocence throughout the process, and the sentence was vacated over a due process issue that was violated in the non-jury trial.
Lang continues to remain on administrative leave.
