SR wins 5th region crown in a row
Kelly Benson and Ella McDermott each scored 15 points as the Slippery Rock girls basketball team wrapped up a region title for the fifth consecutive year with a 60-47 home win over Meadville Monday night.
The Rockets (15-6, 11-1) had to overcome injuries to two of its three top scorers from a season ago.
Junior guard Maryann Ackerman was lost for the season when she tore her ACL in the spring and junior guard/forward Hallie Raabe missed 10 games with a severely sprained ankle.
“I couldn't be more proud of them,” said Slippery Rock coach Amber Osborn. “They really stepped up when they needed to. I think we were counted out because of our injuries.”
But Benson and McDermott rose to the occasion.
So did Anna Kadlubek and Bronwyn McCoy, who each scored 13 in the clinching victory for the Rockets.
“Anna showed a lot of leadership to trust in her teammates and carry them when needed,” Osborn said.
Slippery Rock closes out the regular season Tuesday at home against West Middlesex.
