Keep dreaming: Christmas will be warm, not white

There won't be snow for Christmas Day this year, and it will be one of the warmest in recent history.

“No snow,” said Fed McMullen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. “We could have a light rain shower Thursday, Thursday night, and our next shot (for rain) will come Sunday.”

With high temperatures forecast in the low 50s all week, Christmas Day is predicted to be one of the warmest on record.

“This will be the warmest Christmas since 2015 and the third warmest since 1982,” McMullen said. “In the Butler area, you're going to be in the 50s Wednesday through Saturday. Over the next seven days daytime highs will largely be in the 50s.”

The temperatures in the forecast are 10 to 15 degrees above average for this time of the year, he said.

Monday's high temperature was 51 degrees under sunny skies, and the forecast called for Tuesday's high to reach 43 under mostly sunny skies before rising to 51 under mostly cloudy skies on Christmas.

The outlook for Thursday and Friday is cloudy with highs around 50.

There is a 30 to 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday with highs in mid to upper 40s.

Most area golf courses are remaining closed this week despite the unseasonably warm weather, but people wishing to take advantage of it can go to Moraine Sate Park, which is open all year long.

“The whole park is open,” said Brian Flores, assistant park manager. “The only thing that isn't open is the office.”

Docks are being removed from Lake Arthur, but the boat launches are open, Flores said.

Even during normal winter weather, the lake usually doesn't freeze with ice thick enough for ice fishing at Christmas, he said.

As of Monday, some of the coves had about an inch of ice and other parts of the lake have a thinner layer of ice, he said.

“It takes such a long time to freeze,” Flores said.

The park trails, which are open, will host the annual New Year's First Day Hike. About 400 people turned out for the First Hike this year.

“It was one of the largest in the state,” Flores said.

People participating in the Audubon Society's annual Christmas bird count usually come to the park, he said.

Flores said hunters often come to the park to pursue game during the holidays.

McConnells Mill State Park and the Jennings Environmental Education Center are also open, he said. Jennings also hosts a First Day Hike.
