Succop Nature Park, 185 W. Airport Road, Penn Township, hosts Birds and More nature walks at 9 a.m. Thursdays. The newly renovated T.W. Phillips Barn features a WindStax turbine that supplies electricity to the building, a nature store, classroom space, a large upstairs area that can be used for programs or rentals, and numerous bathrooms. Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528, Brady Township, is open regularly from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Call 724-794-6011.
Moraine State Park will be the site of a First Day Hike at 1 p.m. Jan. 1 from McDanel’s Pavilion 7 on the North Shore. The hike will be on the North Country National Scenic Trail, led by experienced guides. Hikers can opt to walk from 1 mile up to 6 miles on moderate terrain. Join the Moraine Preservation Fund for a “warm up reception” following the hike with hot cocoa, cookies, and a camp fire. Dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes or boots, and take your own water and snacks; friendly dogs on leash are welcome. Call 724-368-8811.
McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, just over the county line into Lawrence County off Route 422, will host Winter Tree ID at 10 a.m. Jan. 11 at the Kildoo Picnic Area. Participants can learn the basics of tree identification in the winter. Join DCNR staff for a guided walk through the grassy areas adjoining the picnic grounds, visiting a variety of trees and using forestry techniques. Dress for the weather, snow or shine (severe weather cancels event) and take a drink or snack. All ages are welcome; the event is family friendly.
