Commissioners, Fitzgerald lauded for bipartisan efforts
The Butler County Commissioners, along with the Allegheny County executive, will receive the inaugural “Moe” Coleman Award.
Commissioners Kevin Boozel, a Democrat, and Leslie Osche and Kim Geyer, both Republicans, will be honored along with Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
The award, which recognizes bipartisan work between politicians, will be presented during a private ceremony Monday.
“We were really honored to receive the first award,” Osche said. “I think when we came in four years ago, we kind of set a tone with how we were going to work together.”
Boozel said the work they did on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission transportation plans was part of what drew attention to the group.
Part of the collaboration between counties includes the MSA Thruway project, which would build a tunnel underneath Route 228 to provide relief for heavy traffic flow in the area around Interstate 79.
“Basically it's about bipartisan getting stuff done. Putting aside your political affiliation for the betterment of people,” Boozel said. “Working with Rich has been easy.”
Boozel said they will need to cooperate further to reach their goals and provide better cross-county transportation systems.
“I don't want this to be an 'Oh good we're done scenario,'” Boozel said. “We have a lot to do.”
According to Osche, there will be a continued focus surrounding the Route 19 and Route 8 corridors.
“(We want to) connect the corridors together to try and create efficiencies across county lines,” she said.
