Symphony offers holiday concert, house tour Saturday

Matthew Kraemer, music director and conductor of the Butler County Symphony Orchestra, will lead the orchestra's “Holiday Traditions” concert on Saturday. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.

BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Symphony Orchestra's “Holiday Traditions” concert on Saturday will feature the Christmas part of Handel's “Messiah, Part 1” and traditional holiday pops.

The 30th anniversary Holiday Tour of Homes to benefit the symphony association takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 the day of the tour.A luncheon is planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church.

The 41st annual Young Artist Competition will be held Jan. 12 at Swope Hall on the campus of Slippery Rock University.This year the competition is open to high school students in grades nine through 12.Applications are due by Dec. 20.

The rest of the symphony's 2019-20 concert season will include:- “Beethoven at 250,” Feb. 1, with cellist Roman Mekinulov and Strauss' “Don Quixote” and Beethoven's “Symphony No. 5”- “Arthur Fiedler's Pops,” March 7, with “1812 Overture,” “Light Cavalry Overture,” “The Typewriter,” and a Beatles medley- “Mahler's Titan,” April 11, 2020, with the winner of the concerto contest and Perttu's “To Spring — An Overture.”
