White-tailed deer season underway

Hunters have begun their annual pursuit of white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania’s two-week season that started Saturday.

Only antlered deer can be harvested during the first week from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, and antlered and antlerless deer can be taken from Dec. 7 to 14 in most of the state, including Butler County.

The two-week season is traditionally called the rifle season because it is the first season in which rifles can be used except for a special season for junior and senior hunters in October, but hunters can use archery equipment and muzzleloading firearms.

A statewide flintlock season for bucks and does opens Dec. 26 and ends Jan. 25 for hunters still looking to fill their tags. Archery equipment can also be used during the flintlock season.

An antlerless deer season in Allegheny County and certain eastern counties also runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 25.

A general hunting license includes a buck tag, but hunters must apply for permits to hunt doe.

Pennsylvania Game Commission rules require deer hunters to wear a minimum of 250 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing on their heads, chest and back combined during the two-week season. Fluorescent orange clothing is not required during the flintlock season.
