Support our local businesses for the holiday season

Although our buying habits have shifted to online retailers in recent years, we urge our readers to take part in Small Business Saturday.

A day dedicated to supporting local merchants and communities across the country, Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010.

Last year, 104 million shoppers spent a record high of $17.8 billion at small, independently owned businesses and restaurants on Small Business Saturday. The credit card giant says 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the community.

Sure, you may be able to find a better deal online or at a big-box or chain store, but there is something to be said for shopping at a business operated by friends and neighbors.

You have a connection you would not have with an online or national retailer. Interaction with local store owners and employees makes for a pleasant shopping experience, and small-business owners are going to go the extra mile to make you happy. Take advantage of their expertise.

Other reasons to shop small:

- Local business owners are invested in the well-being of our community and its future.

- More of your money will be kept in the local economy and help retain local jobs.

- Small businesses carry unique products and services that you won’t find anywhere else.

- You get to see, touch and feel an item before buying. Returning a purchase is easier, and you don’t have to go to a post office or shipping service to do so.

Local businesses give a community its flavor. Towns across the United States have similar chain restaurants, grocery and department stores, but that diner down the street where you have breakfast every Saturday morning or the hardware or clothing boutique are one-of-a-kind.

Shop local tomorrow and throughout the year.

Keep your money in Butler County.
