Seven-time shoplifter accused again
A repeat shoplifter was arrested — again.
This time, Gloria J. Mastrocesare, 67, of Butler, is accused of stealing bottles of mouthwash from a downtown Butler discount store.
With a combined seven shoplifting-related convictions in two states, Mastrocesare was caught Sunday morning, according to city police.
She was allegedly seen shortly after 8 a.m. taking merchandise from the Dollar General store on North Main Street, and fled when employees tried to stop her, police said.
Officers found Mastrocesare walking on Birch Street, police said. She denied taking any items. But a check of a bag she had, according to charging documents, turned up two large bottles of Listerine mouthwash totaling $11.66.
Mastrocesare claimed she bought the items the previous day.
Officers later checked store surveillance video, according to charging documents, which showed the defendant “bending over and placing the two bottles in her bag.”
She allegedly left without paying for the merchandise.
Mastrocesare was arraigned on a felony count of retail theft, and released on her own recognizance. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 16.
Investigators noted the defendant's criminal history for retail theft in the complaint, including two prior convictions in Pennsylvania and five in South Carolina.
Normally a summary or misdemeanor offense, retail theft in Pennsylvania is upgraded to a third-degree felony regardless of the stolen property's value when a defendant has at least two prior arrests for the same crime.
Online court records did not list an attorney for Mastrocesare.
