Rivers gets honor

Rock QB earns conference offensive player of year

LOCK HAVEN — Slippery Rock University senior quarterback Roland Rivers III has been named the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Football Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Year.

The announcement came in conjunction with the release of the all-conference football teams, which along with major award winners, are determined by a vote of the league's West Division head coaches.

Rivers is the fourth athlete from The Rock to earn the award while it marks the sixth time the winner came from Slippery Rock. The last player from SRU to be so honored was Nigel Barksdale in 2013.

Rivers currently leads all of NCAA Division II in touchdown passes (40), passing efficiency (192.70) and points responsible for per game (25.3). He is third in passing yards (3,409).

The Rock (11-0), PSAC champions, earned a bye in the first round of the DII playoffs and will host a second-round game next Saturday.

SRU head coach Shawn Lutz was selected as Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. He is the first coach to repeat in the division since Edinboro's Lou Tepper (2005-06).

The Rock won the conference title for the first time since 2015. Lutz's offense is fifth in DII in points per game (46.9).
