A-C Valley suspends student over alleged threat that affected school

FOXBURG, Clarion County — The Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District has suspended a student for allegedly making a threat on social media that resulted in a campus lockdown Monday and a two-hour delay of classes Tuesday.

“We are aware of who made the threat,” said Superintendent David McDeavitt. “The student who made the threat was placed on out-of-school suspension.”

He said the threat was discovered on a social media site after school hours Monday by an administrator in a neighboring school district who learned about it from a parent and contacted him.

“I quickly realized it was one of our students,' McDeavitt said.

Classes had been dismissed and most students had left when the lockdown began, but those who remained on campus were kept there.

Evening activities and practices were canceled. A two-hour delay for students was implemented Tuesday, but teachers reported at their normal time, McDeavitt said.

State police in Clarion are investigating. They were joined by Emlenton police in greeting staff and students entering campus Tuesday, he said.

During the two-hour delay, staff members were provided with details about the incident, safety procedures were reviewed, and they were allowed to ask questions and offer suggestions, McDeavitt said.

“It's a senseless crime. It disrupts everything and makes everyone concerned,” he said.

The suspension will last nine days, McDeavitt said. During that time, the district will review the results of its investigation and the police investigation. The review could result in the district initiating the expulsion process or allowing the student to return to classes, he said.

The expulsion process requires the school board to conduct a hearing and vote on expelling the student, McDeavitt said.

Classes will return to the normal schedule for the rest of the week.
