Rock makes history

SRU football 10-0 for 1st time following 56-7 win at Gannon

ERIE — It was a day for making history.

Slippery Rock University's football team moved to 10-0 for the first time in the program's history Saturday with a runaway 56-7 triumph over Gannon at McConnell Family Stadium.

SRU quarterback Roland Rivers III threw for four touchdowns, breaking The Rock's single-season and career touchdown pass records. He has 36 TD passes on the year, 64 in his career. Previous records were held by Tanner Garry (32) and Nate Crookshank (64).

Jake Chapla booted six PATs to give him 362 career points, breaking the PSAC record for career points by a kicker. The previous mark of 361 was set by Bloomsburg's Dan Fisher in 2013.

“We accomplished everything we wanted to do today,” SRU coach Shawn Lutz said. “I was impressed by how focused and driven we were in this game.

“Even the way things started ... Our guys didn't even flinch.”

DeSean Dinkins lost a fumble on the first offensive series of the game. Three players later, Zevin Holley got loose for a 28-yard scoring run and Gannon (2-8, 1-6) had a 7-0 lead.

Holley rushed for 147 yards on the day, but was the Golden Knights' only offense. Gannon threw for just 37 yards — none in the second half. Besides Holley's production, Gannon was in negative yardage running the football.

Offensively, it was business as usual for The Rock (10-0, 7-0). Rivers threw for 293 yards. Henry Litwin caught nine passes for 134 yards and two TDs. He has 14 touchdown catches on the year, one shy of John Schademan's single-season Rock record of 15.

“He's having a phenomenal year,” Lutz said of Litwin. “If there's a better receiver in Division II than Henry Litwin this year, I'd like to see him.”

Jermaine Wynn Jr. isn't far behind Litwin. He had 94 receiving yards and a touchdown Saturday. The pair have combined for 122 catches, 1,882 yards and 24 TDs through the air this season.

The Rock built a 35-7 lead by halftime and tacked on three touchdowns in the third quarter. One was a 21-yard fumble return by linebacker Arison Sanders, who had eight tackles. Fellow linebacker Brad Zaffram led the team with 10 tackles.

Defensive end Chad Kuhn had another quarterback sack, extending his PSAC-leading total to 10.5.

Running back Charles Snorweah returned to action after missing two games with an ankle injury and had 64 yards rushing and a touchdown.

“It was good to get him back out there feeling comfortable again,” Lutz said. “We have a good one-two punch in the backfield now.

“We're right where we want to be. We have to get our long snapper (Jacob George) back healthy, though.”

George suffered a concussion in practice late last week and did not play Saturday. SRU had a bad snap on its first PAT attempt in the game.

The Rock will take on fellow unbeaten Kutztown in the PSAC title game Saturday at Kutztown. Starting time will be announced Monday.

SRU is making its sixth appearance in the title game this decade. The Rock hosted the game last season, dropping a 33-10 decision to West Chester.
