Grupp Memorial rugby set Saturday
BUTLER TWP — The third annual Austin Grupp Memorial Rugby Match takes place Saturday at Art Bernardi Stadium.
A 2014 Butler graduate who went on to play for the Indiana (Pa.) University rugby team, Grupp was killed in an automobile accident in December of 2017.
“I'm overwhelmed by the support of so many people who continue to honor Austin by keeping this event going,” Grupp's nother, Tammy Osche, said.
The day begins with a 4:30 p.m. rugby 7s exhibition match between IUP and Gannon. The IUP alumni will then take on the current IUP team at 5:30 p.m.
“Most of Austin's teammates are graduated now, so they formed an alumni team to play,” Osche said.
The IUP women's rugby team will play an intra-squad match at halftime of the first game.
Admission to the matches is free. Donations are welcome and t-shirts will be sold. Those proceeds will go toward an IUP scholarship in Grupp's name. That scholarship will be presented to a freshman on the IUP squad.
Osche has started an “Austin James Grupp Kindness Scholarship” to be awarded to a Butler High School senior. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has done a random act of kindness.
Candidates will submit an essay detailing this act and Osche will select the winner.
“The money for that scholarship was raised by Austin's family and friends,” Osche said. “I just sent the check to the high school. We have enough in there to go for two years.
“Our hope is to make it an ongoing thing.”
