Tornado put 3 in top 10 at WPIAL cross country

C.J. Singleton, Sage Vavro and Skyler Vavro each placed in the top 10 to help the Butler boys cross country team to a second-place finish at the WPIAL Class AAA Cross Country Championships Thursday at California (Pa.) University.

Singleton finished fifth overall with a time of 16 minutes, 22 seconds. Sage Vavro was seventh (16:30) and Skyler Vavro ninth (16:50) for the Golden Tornado, who finished with 88 points.

“We haven't had that many in the top 10 since 1981 when kids went two, three, four and six,” said Butler boys and girls cross country coach Rick Davanzati. “That team placed second at the state meet. This group is kind of special.”

North Allegheny won the team title with 66 points.

The Seneca Valley boys were third, paced by an eighth-place finish by Noah Petersen (16:32).

Both Butler and Seneca Valley qualified as a team for the PIAA Cross Country Championships.

The highest local individual placer was Zachary Leachman of Mars, who finished third with a time of 16:10.

In the Class AAA girls race, Seneca Valley placed second with two top-10 finishers.

Dylan Kirchner placed ninth and Gabrielle Kutchma was 10th. They both had the same time of 20:16.

The Raiders qualified as a team for the state meet.

Butler was fifth as a team and Jennifer Cichra (13th) and Autumn Pettinato (14th) each qualified for the PIAA meet.

In Class AA, the Knoch girls placed third and qualified for the state meet.

Senior Sammy Jo Barnes placed fourth with a time of 20:27.

The Knoch boys also qualified two runners for the PIAA championships. Aaron Plyler was 22nd and Braden Zukowski was 23rd.

The North Catholic girls had three runners in the top 10 in Class A, led by Alaina Hicks' second-place finish at 20:45.

The Trojanettes placed third as a team and will be off to the PIAA championships.

Julia Zalenski was third (20:53) and Emma MacDonald was 10th (21:50).
