Grove City College Professor of History Dr. Gillis Harp's latest book, “Protestants and American Conservatism,” is subtitled “A Short History,” but it takes a longer view than most studies of the subject.Harp traces the relationship between Protestantism and conservative politics over four centuries from “the Puritans to Palin,” according to publisher Oxford University Press.“Protestants and American Conservatism” begins in the Colonial era and takes readers through the Revolution and founding of the United States, the Civil War, the Gilded Age, the decades before and after World War II and finally, the success and failure of the Religious Right over the last 50 years. The 336-page book, published by Oxford University Press, is available in hard cover and digital formats.

Charlotte Dancisin of Butler marks her literary debut with the release of “The Guardians: An Inevitable Destiny,” planned as the first book in a series.A supernatural thriller, the novel introduces Charity, a woman who falls in love with James, who turns out to be a gargoyle from a family of creatures known as Guardians.Even though it's a science fiction story, the novel is apparently listed under the romance section at one book seller, Dancisin said. Other outlets list it under thrillers and suspense or gothic fiction. She also noted that an agent in northern Hollywood has approached her about presenting her book to film producers, but she's not sure what she wants to do about that yet.The 196-page book is available in digital, paperback and hardcover formats, published through iUniverse.

A new release by David L. Anderson of Butler, “Archetypal Figures in 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro': Hemingway on Flight and Hospitality,” examines Hemingway's work using archetypal criticism.Anderson retired as a professor of English from Butler County Community College and is managing editor of the August Wilson Journal, which just put out its first edition in June. The form of criticism used in the book is based on the work of Carl Jung, Anderson said, and he explains all about archetypes in the book's introduction. “I have to explain a few things before I really get going,” he said. The three archetype figures Anderson uses in describing the short story are the Man on Trail, the Pursuer and the Host. And Anderson may have found the quintessential tool for a critical look at the Hemingway classic. The 240-page book, available in digital and hardcover formats, was published by Kent State University Press.

Westminster College English professor, poet and author Dr. David Swerdlow will read from his debut novel, “Television Man,” at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Berlin Lounge of the McKelvey Campus Center on Westminster's campus.“Television Man” centers around a small western Pennsylvania town after it becomes the scene of a school shooting. He joined the faculty in 1990.A book signing will follow the reading. The 330-page book is available in paperback and digital formats.
