Late Mt. Lebo surge sinks Butler, 3-1
MT. LEBANON — Peyton Seibert was in perilous position inches in front of his goal line many times Friday night at Mt. Lebanon.
For 78 minutes, the Butler senior goalkeeper and his teammates kept second-seeded Mt. Lebanon off the scoreboard. But everything changed in the final 83 seconds, which led to a 3-1 defeat and a third straight WPIAL Class 4A boys soccer quarterfinal exit for seventh-seeded Butler.
The second-seeded Blue Devils scored all three of their goals, starting after Butler was whistled for a handball in the box with 1 minute, 23 seconds remaining.
“I think we wanted it a lot for most of the game,” Seibert said. “I think we thought we had it late and the mentality went away with two minutes to go.”
Giuseppe Croce rocketed the penalty kick over Siebert to tie the game. Croce would score the game-winner a minute later when he lofted a shot from inside the box over Seibert. Mt. Lebanon (15-4-1) added another goal when Danny Simboro cleared a shot that snuck over the line as time expired.
“The last I don’t know how many minutes we were defending a lot,” Butler coach Troy Mohney said. “I kepting yelling at our guys to push up and not sit back.”
This marked the third straight season Butler (13-6-1) was eliminated by one of the South Hills heavyweights, previously losing to Upper St. Clair in 2018 and Peters Township in 2017. Mt. Lebanon coach Bill Perz was hoping the Blue Devils would find a way to solve Seibert, who stopped eight shots.
“We had that hope and faith,” Perz said. “You can do everything you can, Butler’s keeper stood on his head tonight with those goal-line saves, you just never know.”
Seibert snared a head from Simboro from point-blank range off a corner in the 60th minute. He would follow that up by turning away another head from Mark Joseph inside the box a minute later.
“In certain situations, there were a lot of quick corners and guys pressuring me,” Seibert said. “In that case, I am trying to find the ball as quickly as I can and make a good read on it. I just want to wait on the ball and see where it goes. I don’t want to overestimate it.”
Perz said Butler was effective at limiting Mt. Lebanon’s possession.
“They did a good job of clogging up the middle and we had a hard time breaking that down,” Perz said. “We did a better job of getting the ball wide and letting us get numbers forward.”
Carson Knight put the Golden Tornado ahead in the 19th minute. Landon Mohney hit a shot from the wing that Mt. Lebanon goalie Joseph Harrington couldn’t catch cleanly.
Knight was waiting and hammered the rebound in.
Mohney thought Butler did a good job of finding opportunities. The Golden Tornado just weren’t able to add any more offense.
It led to another heart-wrenching defeat in the South Hills.
“We were trying to make sure we weren’t giving those opportunities to them,” Mohney said. “We wanted to make sure we caught them in a numbers up situation. We had a few opportunities that if we had made them would have made it 2-0, 3-0, we just didn’t convert.”
