Freeport, SV advance in soccer playoffs
It's nice to have a goal scorer.
It helps to have a goalkeeper, too.
Both came into play for Freeport Monday night as the Yellowjackets edged Waynesburg, 2-1, in overtime in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 2A girls soccer playoffs.
Freeport (15-4) won its third straight game and will take on No. 1 seed Hopewell (12-2) Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
“I looked at the seeding when it first came out and I don't mind being the underdog,” Freeport coach Brittni Grenninger said. “I like it that way.”
She liked what she saw Monday night, too.
The game was scoreless at halftime, primarily because of the goalkeeping of Maddy Zarichnak. She made 14 saves on the night.
“Maddy was phenomenal,” Grenninger said. “This was the best I've ever seen her play.
“They (Waynesburg) dominated the first half. Maddy kept us in this game all night.”
Waynesburg scored first with approximately 20 minutes left in regulation. Sidney Shemanski netted the tying goal for the Yellowjackets less than two minutes later, assisted by Emma Check.
Approximately five minutes into overtime, Shemanski scored the game-winner. She took a pass from Crystal Zembrzuski and scored from 20 yards out.
“She just buried that shot,” Grenninger said.
Shemanski has 36 goals on the season.
“They controlled play in the first half and I thought we controlled play the rest of the way,” Grenninger said.
Waynesburg (10-7) had won five of its last six games going into the playoffs.
Seneca Valley 2, Canon-McMillan 1 — The Raiders (12-3-2) received first-half goals from Zoe Simpson and Mia Zec in winning this first-round playoff game.Simpson scored her eighth goal of the season while Zec netted her fourth. Seneca Valley had a 13-4 edge in shots on net.“I thought we dominated play for the most part. We played very well tonight,” SV coach Mark Perry said. The visiting Big Macs (10-7) scored their goal with six minutes left in the contest. Canon-Mac had won three of its last four games.“We held on from there,” Perry said. “I didn't like the way we finished, but Canon-Mac should have been higher than a 12 seed. This was one of those nights where we had numerous opportunities to add on and couldn't finish those chances.”Morgan Sinan had three saves in goal for Seneca Valley. The Raiders play Moon — a 3-0 winner over Hempfield — in the next round Thursday.
Mars 7, Trinity 0 — The Planets remained unbeaten at 15-0-1 by rolling to this playoff-opening win at home.Taylor Hamlett scored twice for Mars while five other players scored single tallies. Mars takes on Thomas Jefferson (12-6-1) — a 2-1 winner over Montour — Thursday.
