KARNS CITY — No one could fault Karns City if the Gremlins feel like they have a breather coming Friday night.
Karns City's last four football foes — Brookville, St. Marys, Kane and Ridgway — are a combined 23-9 on the season. Now KC (5-3) heads to Bradford (1-7) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
“We're not taking Bradford for granted,” Gremlins coach Joe Sherwin said. “We're working more on the things we can improve on as a team.
“I wish we would have won more in those past four games (2-2), but both losses came down to the final play or two. We could easily be 7-1 right now. I like the way our team is playing.
“Now we're looking for momentum heading into the playoffs,” he added.
Bradford's lone win this year is a 59-34 victory over Punxsutawney two weeks ago. Besides that game, the Owls have only scored 26 points all season. They've been shut out four times.
“We graduated 24 seniors from last year's team,” Bradford coach Jeff Puglio said. “And a lot of our backups were seniors last year.
“We're young, but I feel like we're growing as a football team. It's not always reflected by the score on Friday night, but we're getting better.”
Bradford quarterback Caleb Nuzzo has thrown for 562 yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions. Derek Sunnafrank has rushed for 333 yards and five TDs.
The Owls have switched from the Wing-T to an option offense under a new offensive coordinator this year.
“Caleb and Derek are the guys we try to get the football to in space,” Puglio said.
Bradford is allowing an average of 45.6 points per game.
Karns City quarterback Anthony Kamenski has rushed for 839 yards and eight touchdowns, thrown for 489 and six TDs. Hunter Rowe has 507 yards and six TDs on the ground, Luke Garing 373 yards and seven scores.
“Cory Dunmyre has been adding rushing yardage from the flanker position for us,” Sherwin said. “The more sources we can add to our running attack, the better.”
Kaden Scherer has four interceptions in KC's last two games. Nathan Waltman is consistently producing double-digit tackle games at linebacker.
“We switched up our defense a bit recently to free up Nathan to roam around the middle more,” Sherwin said. “He's been able to shut things down for us there.”
Bradford's defense has produced only five quarterback sacks to go with five interceptions and five fumble recoveries this year.
“Our linebackers are doing a good job and Caleb has been solid at a corner for us,” Puglio said.
“Karns City is a well-disciplined team. They play very hard and that jumps off the film. They are a tough team and they'll come right after us. This is a good test for us because we want to become physically stronger and more aggressive ourselves.”
Bradford has defeated Karns City in the two prior games between the teams, winning 49-10 in 2004 and 34-21 last year.
