Knights hurt by Lions' QB Alemada
SOUTH FAYETTE TWP — The Knoch football team will remember the name Naman Alemada.
The South Fayette junior quarterback went off against the Knights Friday night, throwing for 390 yards on 13 of 19 attempts and six touchdowns.
Alemada's big night helped the Lions win, 42-7, in the battle for first place in the Class 4A Northwest Eight Conference.
“The beauty of it is (Alemada) is getting it to different people,” South Fayette coach Joe Rossi said. “Knoch loaded the box and said throw the football and that's what he accomplished.”
Alameda's top two targets were Ryan McGuire, who caught five passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, and Charley Rossi, who had four receptions for 105 yards and two scores.
“Our plan was to get after him,” Knoch coach Brandon Mowry said. “We were gonna bring pressure and run man coverage against him. If you sit there in zone, he will really pick you apart.”
Knoch (5-2) was coming off a 14-7 overtime loss to Montour last week on homecoming.
“We have to play the full 48 minutes of football,” Mowry said. “We need to be consistent and get after our opponent every play. We're just too up and down right now.”
The Lions wasted no time early in the first quarter, scoring touchdowns on their second and third plays from scrimmage.
Knoch proved they could stop the running game, holding the Lions to 10 yards on the ground.
However, Alemada was too much for the Knights, throwing for three more touchdowns in the first half, and another on the first drive in the third quarter.
“We take what they give us,” Rossi said. “If they were going to sit and play coverage, we'd run the ball, but they put six guys in the box so we attacked.”
Late in the third quarter, the Knights got their only points on a Matt Goodlin 5-yard run, but the damage was already done.
Knoch quarterback Kam Grassi threw the ball more than usual with 6 completions in 16 attempts for 77 yards. However, he had just 17 yards rushing on 12 carries.
After back-to-back losses, the Knights will look to turn things around next week when they play host New Castle (4-3) at 7 p.m.
“We pretty much control our own destiny at this point,” Mowry said. “We get New Castle at home, they played a good Blackhawk team. We gotta get that win at home, it's going to be big for us on senior night.”
New Castle lost to Blackhawk Friday night, 26-6.
