Rivers continues hot start as SRU rolls

Rock QB throws for 301 yards, runs for 122 in 55-14 road win over Seton Hill

GREENSBURG — Roland Rivers III's arm has been pretty hot this football season.

Saturday afternoon at Offut Field, his feet warmed up to the occasion as well.

The Slippery Rock University quarterback ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns, threw for 301 and three scores as No. 10 SRU rolled past winless Seton Hill, 55-14, in a mutual PSAC West opener.

“You think you have Roland bottled up and he gets loose,” Rock coach Shawn Lutz said. “He's pretty elusive for a big quarterback.

“We didn't come in here figuring he'd run that much. But he was patient with his reads and that's what he saw.”

Rivers' rushing yardage came on 19 carries, many on read option plays.

“Their defensive ends kept crashing down,” Rivers said. “I saw that, kept the ball and had plenty of green grass in front of me. I was just trying to get as much of it as I could.”

Seton Hill (0-2, 0-1) was trying to engineer long drives offensively to keep SRU's offense off the field. A 16-play, 68-yard march following The Rock's first touchdown ate nearly nine minutes off the clock. Hunter Miller's 40-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Brad Zaffram to end the Griffins' threat.

A 13-play drive late in the second quarter ended with Miller hitting the right upright on a 43-yard field goal try. An apparent 46-yard touchdown pass to Michael Elardo was nullified by a personal foul earlier in that possession.

“Their offense is so dynamic,” Seton Hill coach Daniel Day said. “Like I said, it's the best I've seen in Division II for a long time.

“I thought we played well for three quarters today. We lacked discipline at times and shot ourselves in the foot with too many mistakes.”

The Rock (4-0, 1-0) scored on all five of its possessions in the first half, taking a 27-0 lead into halftime. Jake Chapla booted field goals of 26 and 44 yards.

The latter field goal came after SRU defensive end Chad Kuhn hit quarterback Chris Jones from behind, forcing a fumble recovered by The Rock's Garrett de Bien with 39 seconds left in the half.

“When we do stall, we have a great kicker like Jake Chapla who can get us points and keep our offensive momentum going,” Rivers said.

Henry Litwin and Jermaine Wynn Jr. both had more than 100 yards and a touchdown receiving for the third time in four games this year. Cinque Sweeting, a transfer from Seton Hill, caught a 30-yard scoring strike for SRU's first points of the day.

“I thought we ran the ball fairly well today,” Lutz said. “Our offense was much more balanced and that was good to see.”

SRU rushed for 199 yards and had 500 yards of total offense to Seton Hill's 222.

The Griffins' touchdowns came in unconventional fashion. On 3rd-and-goal from the 7, Jones pitched the ball to JaiQuawn McGriff, who ran right, turned and tossed a TD pass to an uncovered Jones in the left flat.

Darnell Carey returned a kickoff 92 yards for a Seton Hill touchdown. Both scores occurred in the third quarter and SRU answered with touchdowns of its own both times.

Notes: SRU owns a 9-2 lead in the series and has won eight of the last nine meetings. ... Chapla scored 11 points, pulling him within five of Stran Kennedy's SRU career record of 318. ... RB Nassir Weaver lost a fumble at the Seton Hill 10 late in the game, SRU's first turnover of the season. ... Middle linebacker and Butler graduate Tim Vernick had seven tackles, tying Shane Schuback for the team lead Saturday. ... Rivers has thrown for 1,414 yards, 19 TDs and no interceptions this season. ... The Rock travels to Mercyhurst for a noon kickoff Saturday.
