Warriors fall short

Moniteau running back J.D. Dessicino turns the corner against Brookville in a 21-8 loss Friday night. Dessicino had 108 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown for the Warriors.
Turnovers torpedo Moniteau's upset bid

CHERRY TWP — Turnovers stifled a potential upset by Moniteau's football team on Friday night.

The Warriors had chances against Brookville's potent offense, but mistakes proved too costly in a 21-8 loss in a District 9 Large Conference game.

“I don't think the scoreboard reflects who played the better football game,” said Moniteau head coach Bob Rottman.

Moniteau (1-5, 1-5) fumbled four times, losing three, and threw three interceptions, costing them key opportunities to dent the scoreboard.

“Turnovers hurt us tonight,” Rottman said. “I don't think they stopped us as much as we stopped ourselves on offense.”

Defensively, Moniteau gutted Brookville's running game, allowing only six yards rushing on 19 carries.

Brookville (5-1, 5-1) gained a large bulk of its yardage through the air with its two quarterbacks and a plethora of receivers.

Both Robert Keth, who started the game, and Jack Krug, a starter returning from injury, shared snaps, combining for 28 completions on 49 attempts for 355 yards.

Six receivers recorded catches, many of them coming in the form of a screen pass.

Rottman said he and his staff game-planned for the screen pass.

The strategy was to make Brookville drive the field methodically instead of gambling and giving up the big play.

“When you have speed like they do on the outside, you don't want to give up the one-play drives or touchdowns, so that's the adjustment we made, was to keep the play underneath us and make them drive it down the field,” Rottman said.

Rottman said his defense played a great game, and he expects them to continue building off a performance that was a win in their book.

“They kept a normally high-scoring team to two touchdowns for most of the game,” Rottman said.

Brookville averaged 37 points per game through Week 5.

“They played their butts off tonight,” Rottman said. “We're starting to get some kids healthy, and I think we're going to have a pretty good football team moving forward.”

As for the offense, Rottman is hoping to use the pass more despite a rough game Friday night.

Quarterback Brady Thompson finished with three completions on 15 attempts for 28 yards. He threw all 3 interceptions.

Rottman said Thompson fought to return to the field after an injury in Week Zero against Kane.

“I think our passing game was there. There was a little bit of rust to be knocked off,” Rottman said. “We haven't passed a lot without him, and our receivers aren't in sync with the quarterback.”

As for the fumbles, Rottman doesn't want to discourage their tough style of play by holding Friday night's flaws over one or two players' heads.

“When you try to extend the play and you keep pushing and pushing, sometimes bad things happen,” Rottman said. “Just going to keep telling them to play hard, and I think the rest of the way we have a pretty good football team and our goal is to win the rest of them.”
