State police find missing 3-year-old

State police in Kittanning confirmed Sunday afternoon that a boy from Karns City reported missing has been found and is "safe and sound."

The 3-year-old child was reported missing 10 p.m. Friday from a camp in Perry Township, Armstrong County.

State police said earlier they believed the child was with his father, Patrick Hile.

Community Youth Services and state police Kittanning went to the area of Armstrong Run Road to take custody of the child. Prior to the agencies arrival, the boy's father was seen leaving into the woods, according to a police report that noted there is a camp in the area of Armstrong Run Road, Hillville Road and Seybertown Road.

The area is believed to be where Hile took his son because a friend of Hile's owns the camp area, said Trooper Anthony Vaccaro. However, police searched the area with negative results.

No Amber Alet was issued because police felt the boy was not in danger, Vaccaro said.

Hile was not told prior to the Community Youth Services visit that the custody status with his son had changed, police said.

“He was never told legally by state police or CYS that he no longer has custody of the child,” Vaccaro said Saturday. “To his understanding, he thinks he has custody.”

After two days of searching the area, the boy was designated a missing person.
