SV looks to run
Three touchdowns in two games.
Seneca Valley's offense is capable of much more and coach Ron Butschle is looking for the ground game to spark the winless Raiders.
While all three of the team's scores have come on the ground, the average yards per rush stands at just 2.6 (59 for 152).
“We want to be able to line up and run the ball, but haven't been able to do it,” said Butschle. “That's our goal this week.”
The Raiders visit Canon-McMillan Friday for a Quad County Conference clash with both teams searching for their first win of the season.
The Big Macs just may be what the doctor ordered for SV's ailing rushing numbers.
In last week's 49-21 loss to Mt. Lebanon, Canon-McMillan struggled mightily on defense, including allowing scoring runs of 81 and 27 yards.
The Big Macs (0-2, 0-1) struggled on defense last year and coach Mike Evans has made it a priority to sure things up on that side of the ball.
“We're very young on defense and are working to get better,” he said.
SV's best performer thus far on the ground is Ethan West, who has 48 yards on 10 carries. He is also a viable option in the passing game with five catches for 63 yards.
“He has all the skills a wide receiver has, but when the ball is in his hands, he runs like a running back,” said Butschle. “He's very athletic.”
The Raiders (0-2, 0-1) will also look to get starting halfback Matt Stanger going. He has scored twice this season, but has gained just 28 yards on 14 attempts.
Canon-McMillan also proved susceptible to the pass. Mt. Lebanon quarterback Joey Daniels threw for 187 yards and four touchdowns.
That could mean a big game for SV senior quarterback Gabe Lawson, who was held to under 100 yards passing until the final play of last week's 10-7 loss to Central Catholic.
Offensively, the Big Macs rely heavily on senior quarterback Jon Quinque, who threw for 201 yards and two scores against Mt. Lebanon. The Big Macs led the game 14-7 in the second quarter and trailed just 28-21 in the second half before the Blue Devils managed a flurry of points in the fourth quarter.
“We had a chance to put more points on the board with our two-minute offense, but didn't handle things well at the end of the first half,” said Evans. “Things snowballed on us late.”
Quinque completed 12 passes for just 95 yards in a 31-0 loss to the Raiders a year ago. He will look to provide a stiffer test to SV's secondary, which includes cornerbacks West and Connor Lyczek and safeties Lawson and Conor Hayes. Lyczek and Hayes both intercepted a pass last week.
“He had 16 starts under his belt coming into this season,” Evans said of his quarterback. “He's a great decision-maker and a quiet leader.”
“We can't allow them to dictate things to us,” said Butschle. “We need to get them into a lot of 2nd-and-long, 3rd-and-long situations.”
