Butler wins McDowell Invite

Butler High School's cross country team brought home a pair of first-place trophies from the 46th annual McDowell Invitational Saturday.

The Golden Tornado boys and girls teams won out over a field of 20 schools.

In the boys race, Butler's Skyler Vavro placed sixth, CJ Singleton seventh, Sage Vavro eighth and Tim Patterson 10th. Raine Gratzmiller was 24th.

For the Tornado girls, Chelsey Kabel took fifth, Autumn Pettinato sixth and Jenn Cichra seventh. Krislyn Green finished 19th and Kara Kemple 29th.

Luke Bowser threw for a touchdown and ran for two others Saturday afternoon as Union/A-C Valley scored a 20-14 victory at Sheffield.Bowser tossed a 3-yard scoring pass to Tony Thompson midway through the fourth quarter to snap a 14-14 deadlock.Sheffield (0-2), which went winless last year, had a 14-8 lead at halftime. The Falcon Knights improved to 1-1.Bowser completed eight of 21 passes for 82 yards on the day. Caden Rainey caught three passes for 33 yards.Bowser had nine carries for 59 yards and the two touchdowns.Eli Penny had 11 tackles, Carter Terwint 10 for the Falcon Knights defensively. Rainey had eight tackles and an interception.Union/A-C Valley hosts Curwensville on Friday.

Freeport opened its season Saturday with a 3-0 shutout of Armstrong. Hunter Hardin, Isaac Wetzel and Addison Stewart scored for the Yellowjackets.Luke Heider had one save in the victory.Pine-Richland 1, Knoch 0 — The Knights (0-2) were unable to score on the Rams in this loss.
