Succop Nature Park, 185 W. Airport Road, Penn Township, hosts Birds and More nature walks at 9 a.m. Thursdays. The newly renovated T.W. Phillips Barn features a WindStax turbine that supplies electricity to the building, a nature store, classroom space, a large upstairs area that can be used for programs or rentals, and numerous bathrooms. Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528, Brady Township, will be the site of Silver Sciences: Mining Legacy and Passive Treatment from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday; this program is free but registration is required by Monday at http://events.dcnr.pa.gov or by calling 724-794-6011. The program Nature's Wetland Engineers: Beavers! will be at 2 p.m. Sunday (this program is free and registration is not needed).
Moraine State Park will be the site of a program on “Venomous Snakes of PA” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the McDanel's Launch Area on the North Shore. A “Salamander Safari” program is planned for 4 p.m. Friday, and a Star Party will be hosted from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday at the bike rental parking lot, 157 North Shore Drive. An Owl Prowl is planned for 7:30 p.m. Saturday from the Bear Run Launch on the South Shore. Free Yoga Series at Moraine is set for 4 p.m. Saturday from Eisler's Grove on the South Shore.
McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, just over the county line into Lawrence County off Route 422, has the historic gristmill open from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, including Labor Day. Autumn hours after Labor Day will be 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Tours are given at 1 and 2 p.m. Admission is free. Call 724-368-8811.
