Driver hurt after losing brakes

Crews work to clear the scene of a crash Monday on East Lancaster Road in Lancaster Township.

LANCASTER TWP — A vehicle lost its brakes Monday on East Lancaster Road before striking a bridge, requiring the driver to be taken to a hospital via LifeFlight.

The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of East Lancaster Road and Yellow Creek Road.

Lancaster Township police Patrolman Erik Magness said he was conducting an unrelated traffic stop on East Lancaster Road at the time when a truck and van turned onto the road. The truck appeared to lose its brakes, drifting off the side of the road and striking the van’s right side before hitting a bridge railing and coming to rest. A trail of debris and tire tracks were seen leading to the point of impact.

Magness said the driver of the truck was able to get out of the vehicle on his own, but had an obvious injury to his leg. Magness said he applied a tourniquet and called for additional help.

Lancaster Township police and Harmony fire and EMS responded, and the driver of the truck was transported to a LifeFlight helicopter waiting at the township building. He was then flown to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh. His condition was not known late Monday.

The drivers of the two vehicles were brothers, Magness said, and had just left a nearby job site. No other injuries were reported.
