Tourism bureau selling downtown lot
The Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau is hoping a business that would become part of the county's tourism industry will buy a two-lot parcel the bureau is selling on North Main Street in downtown Butler.
The bureau bought the empty lot, where Worsley's House of Color once stood at 157-161 N. Main St., last year for $199,000.
After an idea the bureau had for the property fell through, the lot was recently listed with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services.
“We've been working on a project that, unfortunately, has not panned out,” said Jack Cohen, bureau president.
He declined to discuss the project, but said he hopes a tourism business buys the property.
“I am a little partial to tourism businesses. We like those types of businesses,” Cohen said.
The bureau bought the commercially zoned property after the remains of the Worsley building, which was heavily damaged in a fire in March 2016, were removed. Worsley's House of Color, which sold paint and wallpaper, operated in the building from 1963 until it closed in 2014.
A “Buildable Lot for Sale” signed recently was placed on the property.
As of Wednesday, the lot did not appear among Berkshire Hathaway's online property listings.
Cohen said the bureau hasn't been notified about any potential buyers.
“We haven't had any calls at this point. We're waiting to see who calls,” he said.
He said he didn't know the asking price, but believes the bureau board of directors wants to recoup the purchase price.
“I believe they're just trying to get back the money they paid for it,” Cohen said.
