Silver Cup race on tap Tuesday

BUFFALO TWP — The 28th annual Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Sprint car race takes place Tuesday night at Lernerville Speedway.

The program features the World of Outlaws Sprint drivers along with the track’s local drivers. The winner receives $25,000.

Kyle Larson won last year’s Silver Cup race, though no one has dominated the feature in recent years. Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo is the only local driver to win the event, doing so in 2002.

Brad Sweet is leading the Outlaws points standings, 20 in front of Donny Schatz. David Gravel is third, 120 points back.

While Sweet has never won at Lernerville, Schatz and Gravel have enjoyed success recently at the Sarver oval. Schatz won the Silver Cup in 2017. He also won Silver Cup races in 2013 and 2014, when there were two feature winners at the Martin Memorial.Gravel won the Commonwealth Clash at Lernerville in 2017 and the Silver Cup in 2016.

A.J. Flick is the Sprint points leader at Lernerville so far this season. He has 269 points, 16 in front of Jack Sodeman Jr. Sarver resident and Freeport graduate Carl Bowser is third in points with 247. Sye Lynch is fourth with 197.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m., qualifying at 7:15 p.m. Opening ceremonies are slated for 8 p.m.
