School district needs major jobs filled

Board also weighs fixing bell system

JEFFERSON TWP — Two major administrative positions will be filled this summer at the South Butler County School District.

Paul Slomer, the district's business manager, resigned effective June 30, and the human resources director who had been hired decided to remain at the school district where she currently works.

Superintendent David Foley said at Wednesday's school board meeting that Slomer had served in the district's top financial position for five years.

“Paul is a terrific guy who worked very hard to make the South Butler County School District a success,” Foley said.

The school board voted to hire Catherine Rodgers as the interim business manager at a salary of $300 per day.

The board had voted last month to hire Patricia Crump at an annual salary of $95,000.

Foley said on Wednesday she has decided to remain at her current school district.

He said both positions have been posted and he hopes to fill the positions before the beginning of the new school year.

Also at the meeting, the board considered the repair of the malfunctioning bell system that alerts middle and high school students that it's time to change classes.

Foley said the bells have been malfunctioning for four or five years, but it would cost about $100,000 to replace the system.

The repair will cost $1,600.

“This is good news,” Foley said.

He added that replacing the bell system could be included in the major improvements being considered by the school board.

Foley also told the board that the air conditioning system is being used during the summer to avoid another mold issue like the one experienced late last summer by many districts, include South Butler.
