Lion-hearted volunteers

At a recent meeting, the Butler Lions Club presented the 2019 Heart of a Lion Award to three community members. Receiving the award were, from left, Dean Balouris, ophthalmologist; Caroline Simms, Butler High School senior; and Tom Taylor, owner of Fairground Market. Balouris has advocated for the community's visually impaired and served on the board of the Blind Association of Butler/Armstrong County for many years. Simms, diagnosed with diabetes at age 10, has worked tirelessly both locally and statewide to raise awareness of the disease through numerous speaking engagements. Taylor has supported Lions fundraising efforts, including the twice yearly sausage sale. For years he has provided the materials, packaging, refrigeration and storage for each event. His other charitable efforts have addressed many of the hunger needs in the community.
