CLAY TWP - A portion of Beaver Dam Road between Delu and Halston roads is closed following a 6:30 a.m. head-on collision that seriously injured a teenager.

The 18-year-old Clay Township man had to be rescued from the van he was driving.

He was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with injuries that were believed to be not life-threatening.

State police are investigating, but an accident report was not immediately available this morning.

Emergency crews said it appeared the van was northbound on Beaver Dam Road, just south of Halston Road, when it collided with a southbound Dodge Avenger. A man driving the car and a woman passenger, both believed to be in their 20s, were able to get out on their own and were not injured.

Matt Wilson, chief of the Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department, said it took “major extrication” to get the teen out of the van. Two doors and part of the roof had to be cut off the vehicle, according to Wilson. He added that the teen was conscious, but in severe pain.

A crew from Butler Ambulance Service transported the teen to the Unionville fire station, where he medical helicopter landed and flew him for treatment.

Wilson said the road would be closed while authorities investigated the crash.
