Dental practice giving free care

Keelan Dental will provide free dental work Saturday — including cleanings, fillings and extractions — at its annual Dentistry From The Heart day.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., anyone over 18 seeking dental care can receive it free at the office at 264 New Castle Road. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

“We're growing our team, so we'd love to see more people,” said Janet Jedlicka, a practice administrator at Keelan Dental.

Keelan Dental paired with the national nonprofit organization Dentistry From The Heart in 2014 to begin holding the now annual event, which has provided over $100,000 in free treatment to more than 375 people in the Butler area.

In previous years, patients have started lining up more than two hours before the doors open to receive service. The event has also grown. Last year, Jedlicka said 98 people were seen throughout the course of the day, 22 more than were seen at their first event in 2014.

This year, the first 100 people in line are guaranteed to be seen. Everyone planning to attend is limited to a single treatment — a cleaning, a filling or an extraction — but Jedlicka said people are free to get back in line once they've been treated. She also said no one has been turned away in the office's six years of hosting the event.

There are no income restrictions on people planning to attend.

“It is our way of giving back, our way of saying thank you,” she said. “There are no questions about income or dental insurance.”

Jedlicka said one of her favorite memories of the day was of a father with a toothache. He worked a job, but did not have dental insurance and was unsure of what to do. Luckily, it was right around the weekend of Dentistry From The Heart day.

“It just touched my heart,” she said. “I was able to help a family and that touched my heart.”

She said that some people come back regularly for the event each year. It is also helpful to former patients who have scaled back on their dental insurance or no longer have any insurance.

“Now more than ever, I know there are individuals that need my services but have no means to afford them — whether they're out of a job, or just don't have dental insurance,” Dr. Paul Keelan said in a news release. “This event is my way of giving back to the community, and being there for the people who are in need of dental work.”

The cost of dental care can be a major burden for many Americans — according to Keelan Dental's website, over 100 million don't have dental insurance.

“Without events like Dentistry From The Heart, dental care simply isn't an option for many of the uninsured,” according to their website.
