Slippery Rock residents experienced a temporary power outage Friday afternoon that was the result of a problem with an underground electric line.

Around noon, power for 1,688 residents of Slippery Rock Borough and Slippery Rock Township went out. Their power was restored by 3 p.m.

Todd Meyers, a spokesman for West Penn Power, said company workers aren’t sure what caused the equipment problem.

“It’s something you can’t see because it’s buried,” he said.

Oftentimes, he said, these issues arise because of moisture or corrosion.

Butler County residents have seen large amounts of rainfall throughout the week, ranging from an inch and a half in the northern parts of the county to four inches in the southern parts, according to Bill Modzelewsai, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Pittsburgh.

Modzelewsai said Slippery Rock alone has had 1.91 inches of rainfall since Monday.

As workers make the repairs, Meyers said that customers affected in Slippery Rock will be temporarily supplied by power from a different electric line.
