County unemployment rate returns to record low
Butler County maintained a record low unemployment rate in April, new estimates show.
New estimates from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry Center for Workforce Information and Analysis show a 3.2 percent unemployment rate for Butler County. The county maintained the lowest rate in the seven Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
The center's estimates indicate that Butler County dropped back to its record low from February, which was the lowest rate in their records which date back to 1976. In March, the estimated rate inched up to 3.3 percent.
Pennsylvania's average rate also slightly dipped from 3.9 to 3.8 percent. The national rate fell from 3.8 to 3.6 percent.
The Pittsburgh metropolitan area's unemployment rate mirrored the state's 3.8 percent rate. That, too, is a record low for the area dating back to 1976, according to an analyst for the center.
Along with unemployment data, the center releases job change estimates for various industries for the full Pittsburgh area. The professional and business services industry had the largest gain, which the center tied to seasonal hiring. Behind that industry, construction and leisure/hospitality had increases that were beneath what the analysts would expect give historical data.
The total number of nonfarm jobs in the Pittsburgh area decreased by 2,600 to 1,191,900.
