Memorial Day weekend busy for troopers, 21 DUI arrests made

It was a busy holiday weekend for troopers patrolling Butler County roads and looking for drunken drivers.

State police said they arrested 21 motorists in the county for driving under the influence over the extended Memorial Day weekend.

Across Troop D — which includes Butler, Armstrong, Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer and counties — there were 40 DUI arrests.

“We don't try to ruin anyone's good time, but we just want people to be safe on the road,” troop commander Capt. Steve Ignatz said Tuesday. “We want people to drink in moderation and not to drive impaired.”

State police over the four-day weekend conducted roving patrols as well as a DUI checkpoint between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday on Route 8 in Brady Township.

Police noted the Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer driving season, a time that can lead to ramped up DUI patrols.

“We're always looking out for impaired drivers,” Ignatz said. “We want to get the message out that if you're going to imbibe on alcohol or drugs and get behind the wheel, then you're going to get caught and it's going to cost you.”
