Knoch softball falls in playoffs

Knights drop 4-0 decision in 4A semifinals to E. Forward

MONROEVILLE — One big inning cost the Knoch softball team.

Elizabeth Forward scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to down the Knights 4-0 in the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals at Gateway High School.

The loss was only the second of the season for the Knights (17-2) and snapped their 13-game winning streak.

Elizabeth Forward improved to 16-3 and extending its winning streak to 15 games as they head to the district championship game Wednesday against Mount Pleasant.

A pitchers duel was at hand through the first five innings with both teams unable to put runs on the board.

The Warriors broke free in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on two-run singles from Brooke Markland and Bri Sersevic.

Knoch couldn't recover in the top of the seventh.

Knights pitcher Amanda Fischer took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out three batters and walking one.

Brynnae Coe and Monica Gourley contributed to the Knoch offense with two singles each.

Knoch still has hope to make the PIAA tournament as it will take on Thomas Jefferson in the section consolation game on Tuesday at a time and location to be determined.
