Help your dog beat allergies
With allergy season in full swing, many dog owners don’t realize that their four-legged friends can suffer from allergies, too. To help owners provide relief for their pets, the American Kennel Club reveals the signs of allergies and how to treat them.
Common signs of allergies in dogs:
Scratching and biting (due to itching)
Red, inflamed skin
Dry skin
Excessive shedding
Irritated eyes
Licking paws
Scooting
Sneezing, runny nose
TREATMENT
Take a trip to the vet: Have your veterinarian evaluate your dog. She may be prescribed cortisones, antihistamines or medicated shampoos. Your vet may also recommend giving your dog omega-3 fatty acid supplements.
Food testing: Your dog may be reacting to something in her food. Try putting her on an “elimination diet” -— feed her just one protein type at a time to try to narrow down what is causing the reaction. Make sure to maintain a balanced diet in order to keep your dog healthy and able to fend off allergy symptoms.
Jump in the bath: Prevent dry, itchy skin by giving your dog a bath more often with veterinarian advice.
