Two people died when a single-engine plane crashed in Centre County while on its way to Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport Wednesday, the Centre Daily Times reported.

The Cessna C172 plane — which took off from University Park Airport in Benner Township — crashed into the side of Sandy Ridge Mountain in Rush Township around 1 p.m. The plane was owned by the State College-based flying club Psyfliers, the newspaper reported.

The identities of the two victims — who were pronounced dead at the scene — are unknown at this time. Autopsies were scheduled for Thursday evening.

According to the FlightAware website, which is a flight-tracking database for pilots, the plane was expected to land at the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport at 2:03 p.m. Wednesday.

Ike Kelly, airport manager for Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport, told the Butler Eagle Thursday morning that he confirmed with state police that the aircraft was headed to Butler County.

He said he received a phone call around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday from authorities asking if the Cessna airplane had showed up from State College. Kelly said at the time that he had no information about the plane other than that it was listed to arrive at the airport.

He told police he would contact them if a plane fitting that description arrived, and advised police at 2:15 p.m. that no such plane had landed.

The investigation has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the crash.
