Butler police seized several bags of suspected crack cocaine following an early morning traffic stop Wednesday in Butler.

The amount of alleged drugs and how they were packaged were enough to earn James T. Brown, 63, of Butler a felony charge and a cell in the Butler County Prison on six-figure bail.

Patrolman Kory Fleming was on duty shortly after midnight when he noticed a car make turns onto Center Avenue and South Cliff Street without the driver using his signals, police said.

The officer stopped the car and Brown identified himself by name and date of birth. He admitted that he did not have a driver's license.

Fleming said that a mobile digital fingerprint identification device later determined that the defendant had given a bogus birth date.

A check of the Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network database found that he was wanted for a parole violation, according to Fleming's affidavit.

Brown denied there was anything illegal in the car, police said, but a search of the vehicle turned up a plastic bag containing five individual bags of suspected crack.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Brown on a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a misdemeanor charge of false identification to law enforcement authorities, and three traffic violations.

He is in the county prison on $100,000 bail.
