Unemployment figures remain low in March
The unemployment rate in Butler County remained low in March after hitting a historic bottom in February, new numbers show.
Estimates from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry Center for Workforce Information and Analysis revised an already record-setting low in February to an even lower figure, and new March numbers are low as well.
The center previously put Butler County at 3.3 percent unemployment in February. On Tuesday, it revised that estimate down to 3.2 percent. The March estimate is a 3.3 percent rate.
Lauren Riegel, an analyst for the center, said they'll revise all the numbers again in a yearly review, but for now February stands as a record low for the county dating back to the beginning of the center's data set in 1976.
“Butler is tied for the ninth lowest unemployment rate of the 67 counties,” Riegel noted.
It's tied with Franklin and Bucks counties.
Butler County maintained the lowest unemployment rate in the Pittsburgh area in March.
In historical data, the last year of finalized data for Butler County with a value under 4 percent was 2007, “right before the recession,” Riegel said.
Jobs in the seven county Pittsburgh metropolitan area hit a record high of 1,195,600 in March, according to Riegel.
Growth was fairly widespread across various industries, although education and health services, which are grouped together, took a slight hit.
“Over the year, it was still showing a very large gain,” Riegel said. “One small drop in one month isn't much to be concerned about.”
The largest increases were in the “leisure and hospitality” sector and in construction. The center considers both those increases consistent with seasonal changes.
