KITTANNING TWP, Armstrong County — A search for ghosts in the dark of the night Sunday possibly sparked a case of road rage, leaving a Worthington woman seriously injured, authorities said.

State police Tuesday said they have identified the suspected hit-and-run driver who they believe struck and dragged the 26-year-old victim with her car.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the suspect, who they would only say is a woman in her 20s or 30s.

Police also have the car the suspect was driving, said Cpl. Curtis Guntrum. She does not own it.

The incident played out around 2:30 a.m. Sunday at Little Germany and Campbells Run roads in Kittanning Township, where a group of friends, including the victim, were “searching for ghosts,” according to a police report.

The group had driven there and were out of the car when the suspect pulled up behind them in a car.

“The suspect began yelling at the victim and her friends to move off the road,” the report said,

Words were exchanged, police said, after which the suspect accelerated “at a high speed” and slammed into the driver's side rear bumper of the group's car.

The suspect sped around the driver's side of the car and struck the victim, who was standing next to the vehicle.

The victim was dragged 20 to 30 feet before falling off the suspect's car and landing in the middle of the road, police said, “screaming in pain.”

Police said she suffered extensive injuries to her head, brain and neck. She was taken to an unspecified hospital.

She was listed in stable condition Tuesday, and authorities said they believed she would be discharged soon.

The suspect drove away after the altercation and was last seen traveling east on Little Germany Road in a car that was missing the passenger side mirror and had damage to the front passenger side.

Police issued a news release following the incident and asked anyone with information to contact them.

A tip helped police identify the suspect, Guntrum said, and led them to the car she was driving.

Investigators have spoken to the woman, but details about what she said were unavailable. She was not immediately taken into custody.

She would likely face criminal charges, police said, but a decision was still pending.
