BC3 softball falls shy of WPCC title
The Butler County Community College softball team was denied a fourth successive Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship, losing a 12-8 decision to Westmoreland.
The Pioneers (5-1) had a season-high 14 hits in a 16-1, five-inning semifinal win over Garrett College.
Amber Izzo, a freshman, had 17 hits in 17 at bats entering Saturday’s tournament and led all of NJCAA Div. III in hitting. She and Knoch graduate Abby Black had two singles in the title game.
Knoch graduate Sydney Natili and Karns City graduate Mackenzie Craig had three hits each.
In the semifinal game, Izzo hit her first home run of the season and had three hits, but made her first out of the campaign on a fly ball to left.
Knoch graduate Jesse Yenick had three hits, including two doubles and two RBI in the semifinal win. Natili hit her first home run of the year and Black had a double, single and three RBI.
Seton Hill 3-10, SRU 1-2
Slippery Rock dropped a doubleheader to Seton Hill on Senior Day, losing 3-1 and 10-2. Seniors Megan Brown, Andria Copelli, Caitlyn MacKelvey and Kailey Myers were honored before the games.
The losses knocked SRU out of playoff contention.
SRU ended its season Sunday with a 7-6, 1-0 twinbill loss at Gannon. Camie Shumaker was the hard-luck losng pitcher in the nightcap as SRU finished 18-27 overall, 8-12 in PSAC West play.
Baseball
Slippery Rock (13-24, 3-18) was swept in a twinbill at Indiana (Pa.), losing 10-8 and 10-6.
Frankie Jezioro had five hits in the doubleheader, including a home run, five RBI, four runs scored and three stolen bases.
Tyler Merigliano had five hits and three RBI. Joe Campagna reached base for the 36th and 37th consecutive games this season.
