She's doing it all
GREENVILLE — Her numbers speak for themselves.
All of them.
Hitting and pitching.
Academic and athletic.
Freeport graduate and Thiel College senior softball pitcher Jessica Kelley is enjoying a dream final year with the Tomcats.
“Jess is amazing,” first-year Thiel softball coach Stephanie Fort said. “She's doing it all.”
Athletically, Kelley played volleyball at Thiel as well as softball was an all-section player in both sports in high school. In softball, she's been the team's top pitcher along with playing left field, shortstop and second base.
In the circle, she's 10-11 with a 3.97 earned run average, three shutouts and two saves. She's logged 141 innings on the mound.
At the plate, Kelley is hitting .438, leads the Presidents' Athletic Conference with 64 hits, is third in the league in runs scored, third in batting average, fourth with 26 RBI and seventh with a .534 on-base percentage.
Kelley has also stolen a team-leading 16 bases in 17 attempts and she's been named PAC Hitter of the Week twice this season.
“I just wanted this year to be my best year,” Kelley said. “I wasn't happy with what I did last season. I thought I was better as a freshman and sophomore.
“This had to be my year to bounce back.”
Kelley hit .290 last season and was 4-10 on the mound with a 6.58 ERA as Thiel finished 12-22 overall, 7-11 in PAC play.
She helped Thiel clinch a berth in the PAC Tournament this year by pitching both ends of a 7-5, 2-0 doubleheader sweep over Geneva Wednesday. Kelley allowed three earned runs on six hits in the first game, tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap.
“Jess stepped up into a leadership role this year,” Fort said. “That and maturation has made all the difference in her play.
“She's been everything to us this year. Poor kid ... I keep moving her around to different positions, wherever we need somebody, and she plugs those gaps.”
Kelley has no problem doing so.
“Anything I can do to help the team,” she said. “Left field is my main position when I'm not pitching, but I've played second base. When our shortstop was injured, I filled in there.
“I love what's happening with our team. We're confident we can win our conference tournament.”
Thiel hasn't won the PAC softball championship “in so long, I couldn't tell you when it was ... It was way back,” Fort said.
“If our team just plays our game all the way through, I don't think anyone in the league can beat us,” the coach added.
Few are beating Kelley in the classroom, either.
She was named the PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's Scholar Athlete of the Month for March. Kelley is carrying a 3.74 grade point average as an early childhood and special education major.
Kelley has been named to the Dean's List five times, qualified for the PAC Academic Honor Roll on four occasions and has volunteered at St. Paul's, a senior living center in Greenville.
Her disciplined lifestyle translates to success on the mound.
“Jessica has ice in her veins,” Fort said in describing her mind-set in the circle. “Nothing rattles here. She knows how to make adjustments when she's pitching or hitting.”
Right now, all Kelley wants to do is win.
“We've got some older girls on the team who are leading and some younger players who have made us stronger,” she said. “We believe in each other.
“All we have to do now is go out and do it.”
The four-team, double-elimination PAC Tournament is next weekend.
