Moniteau answers wake-up call in time
After a thrilling — and late — night on Thursday, the Moniteau baseball team looked a bit sleepy in the top of the first inning Friday evening.
A-C Valley struck for two runs in the frame, taking advantage of two Warrior errors, for a quick 2-0 lead.
Moniteau woke up in the bottom of the frame.
The Warriors sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored 10 runs on the way to a 13-4 win over the Falcons Friday night at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park.
Moniteau (9-3) was coming off a 3-2 win over Clarion less than 24 hours earlier in a game that ended after 11 p.m.
“It was a real late night,” said Moniteau senior pitcher/shortstop Hunter Fitzingo. “We just talked before the game about really attacking the pitcher. Looking first pitch and attacking the ball.”
Moniteau carried out that plan.
Gage Neal had a two-run double in the first. Jared Lominski had a single and also had a two-run double in the outburst and Fitzingo had a triple and a bases- loaded RBI walk.
Nine of the 10 runs scored with two outs.
The onslaught chased A-C Valley pitcher Luke Whitcomb after just 2/3 of an inning.
“They hit Luke pretty hard,” said A-C Valley coach John Irwin. “But they hit everyone hard. They're a pretty talented team.”
Freshman Gary Amsler relieved Whitcomb and shut down the Warriors for 3 2/3 innings.
The stocky left-hander didn't throw hard, but he hit his spots, changed speeds and worked inside/outside, up/down to keep the Moniteau hitters off balance.
“He does a nice job,” Irwin said. “He has a baseball IQ that is just unbelievable. He just knows how to play baseball; knows how to pitch. You look at him and you don't think he should, but he can play. It's promising for him as a freshman.”
What was promising for A-C Valley (2-8) was it hung with Moniteau after the rocky first inning.
The Falcons scored twice in the top of the fourth inning off Moniteau reliever Ray Dean, getting three straight singles from the bottom of their order by Joe Dehart, Tony Thompson and Riley Bauer and a sacrifice fly by Broc Weigle.
But Moniteau then turned to Luke Pry, who retired all nine batters he faced for the save.
Pry, whose cousin Lake is having a breakout season on the mound at Grove City College, struck out three in his three clean innings.
Pry was the fourth pitcher of the night for the Warriors, who were looking to get some work for some of their arms.
“I didn't know I was going to pitch until later on,” Pry said. “I started throwing my breaking ball a lot better in my second inning. Everything that was hit the defense made the play on behind me.”
The Warriors got through this busy week with three wins in four days.
Now they are off until Wednesday.
“We just have to feed off of that,” Fitzingo said. “We have to keep going through the season playing every game playing our hearts out.”
